Women in Transition

When women make the difficult decision to leave an abusive home, they face extraordinary obstacles.  Where will they go?   How will they pay the bills?   Will their children thrive?  These women often walk away from most of their belongings, leaving behind everything they would need to start a new life except the clothes on their backs and the toys in their children’s hands.

The Women in Transition Project, conceived and sponsored by Northwest Society of Interior Designers,  is committed to providing furnishings for women and their families who are moving from emotionally and/or physically abusive situations.  Donated furnishings help them make a new start and fill their lives with hope.

Here’s how it works:  Designers request their clients donate gently used, fairly clean, smaller-scale furnishings in good working condition.  Then movers transfer the furnishings to storage, and from there, into the new apartments and homes of these deserving families.

Members of Northwest Society of Interior Designers have donated hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars to Women in Transition since its inception.   Every year, a portion of the ticket sales to their annual fund raiser will be reserved for moving, storage and other expenses related to this worthy project.

Please contact the office for Women in Transition contact information to facilitate the pick up of gently used, smaller-scale furnishings from your clients. A donation form for tax purposes is provided for your clients.

Day of Caring

We are always looking for ideas for our annual Day of Caring. This is a worthwhile cause and if you should know of a women's abuse shelter or any other place that assists women in need and needs help in revamping their space, please contact Cara Fleming with your suggestions.

We will keep you informed on when and where. Know that we will need volunteers to make this happen.
